Police warn of unexpected spike in petrol theft around Centurion.
There has been a sudden spike in petrol theft around Centurion, police warned this week.
Several crimes of this nature were reported to the Wierdabrug police station the past two weeks, said spokesperson Captain Agnes Huma.
Huma said garage owners should take note and train petrol attendants to be wary of such criminals.
She said most crimes happened just after the attendant had put fuel in the car with the driver pretending to be ready to pay.
Just as the attendant turned his back, the driver then set off without paying.
“Petrol attendants should, before they pour any fuel into a car, do a subtle check whether the licence plate number and the number on the car’s registration disc match,” said Huma.
If they did not, this should set off alarm bells that the car was stolen or had fake number plates – all indications that the driver might leave without paying.
The petrol crimes so far appeared to have been committed by different people, Huma said.
