NEWSFLASH: ATM bombed in city centre
“Samples taken at the scene include fragments of suspected commercial explosives with an electronic detonator”.
Two men bombed an ATM in central Pretoria on Wednesday morning.
The blast at an Engen garage on the corner of Van Riebeeck Avenue and Andries Pretorius Road was heard around 01:57.
Central police spokesperson Captain Augustinah Selepe said five officers from a nearby military base saw the two bombers carrying rifles.
“A while later, there was a loud bang.”
The officers saw a white Toyota Condor picking the two up, Selepe said.
The military police were informed and they cordoned off the area.
“Samples taken at the scene include explosive fragments from suspected commercial explosives with an electronic detonator,” Selepe said.
It was not immediately clear how much money was stolen.
Selepe said police had viewed video footage of the bombing and the investigation had been handed over to a provincial task team.
