Ekangala situation calm after night of fire
Violence erupted near the station when protesters throwing stones at police set a delivery truck on fire.
A barbed wire fence was placed around the Bronkhorspruit police station in Ekangala in the east of Pretoria on Wednesday morning following public violence outside the station.
Violence erupted near the station on Tuesday afternoon when protesters threw stones at police and set a delivery truck on fire.
“Protesters barricaded roads and threatened to burn the Bronkhorspruit police station,” said police spokesperson Constable Connie Moganedi.
She said the situation was calm on Wednesday morning after the night of violence.
Moganedi said reasons for the demonstration were still to be confirmed, but police reports indicated that residents began protesting on Monday when a bus was burnt.
“A high number of police are patrolling Ekangala section A and B, were the demonstrations started.”
Moganedi said more than 10 people were arrested during the tense situation on Tuesday afternoon.
“The group would appear in the Bronkhorspruit Magistrate’s Court soon,” she said.
