Elderly woman knocked out cold in robbery

The 78-year-old woman was attacked by four robbers during a house robbery.

A 78-year-old woman was robbed at gunpoint by four men at her home in Irene on Jan Smuts Avenue.

Pearl Schnelle said the men knocked her out on Wednesday two weeks ago, and when she came to they had fled with most of her belongings

“It was around 22:20, when I took out the garbage. I walked back to the house and as I was locking the burglar gate, four men came running in my direction.”

She said the men broke her lounge window and were making their way inside her home.

“I was terrified. I thought the men were going to rape me,” she said.

Schnelle said the men knocked her out.

“The men took jewellery, a cellphone and a laptop,” she said.

When Schnelle gained consciousness, she immediately called her neighbours for help and they alerted police.

Schnelle said her daughter drove from Johannesburg to take her to hospital.

Monitor Net and the police arrived and my daughter gave them a statement.”

Monitor Net spokesperson Paul Gerber said : “We received a call for an armed robbery in progress, and one of our tactical units was dispatched.”

He confirmed a cellphone and personal items were stolen but a laptop was found outside the residence.

Lyttelton police had not confirmed the robbery at the time of going to print.
