Residents beat up would-be burglar
The man was dragged and beaten with a cricket bat before police intervened.
A man was dragged and beaten by Elandspoort residents after an attempted house burglary on Tuesday.
Homeowner O.N. Mathole said three men tried to break into his house on Tuesday around 10:45, but he spotted them in the yard.
“A neighbour screamed when he saw them roaming around, two of them immediately jumped the high wall and escaped while one was left behind,” he said.
“The neighbour chased the man down the street until neighbouring men caught up with the man. They stomped him and beat him with a cricket bat. He was then dragged back to the house he had tried to burgle.”
Mathole said police arrived and rescued the man from the angry mob.
“I was told the suspect would be released as soon he was discharged from hospital.”
Mathole said the 23-year-old perpetrator and his friends had previously robbed his house.
“The last time they were here, they stole equipment from the garage and clothes from the washing line.”
Residents managed to find the man’s father who then had to watch his son being lashed and taken by the police.
All he said was that he knew nothing about his son’s behaviour since he works far away from home, Mathole added.
The residents said that this was the man’s second robbery in two days.
Mathole said he would not lay a charge with police.
Police spokesperson Captain Bonginkosi Msimango said he was not aware of the episode.
