President Zuma urged South Africans to undertake serious introspection to solve the challenge of violent protests.
President Jacob Zuma has called on the country to come up with solutions and undertake serious introspection to solve the challenge of violent protests.
Speaking at Youth Day celebrations in Soweto on Thursday, Zuma said violent protests were threatening to destroy the social fabric of society.
He condemned the violent protests that gripped the country, saying the conduct was unacceptable.
“There can be no justification for such violence in a country where, unlike in June 1976, we have access to government at three spheres to communicate our grievances peacefully.”
“We should remember that not a single school was burned during the June 16, 1976 student uprising,” said Zuma.
This year marked 40 years since the Soweto Uprising, where hundreds of young people protested against the use of Afrikaans as the medium of instruction in local schools. Hundreds of school children lost their lives.
Zuma urged South Africans to respect each other regardless of age, even if they disagreed on certain matters.
“Hooliganism and thuggery do not build nations. I also wish to remind the South African youth to uphold the values that we hold dear as a nation, such as Ubuntu and respect.”
