VIDEO: Residents hide as protesters fire shots in street

A Pretoria couple hides in their home as protesters fired gunshots in a residential area.

A video has emerged of a shooting in the west of Pretoria on Tuesday afternoon.

The video shows homeowners hiding in their homes while angry protesters marched down a street believed to be in Booysens. After a few seconds into the video clip, the viewer sees flashes and hears gunshots fired.

Chaos erupted across Pretoria on Monday after the ruling party announced that incumbent mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa would be ousted by former cabinet minister Thoko Didiza. Should the ANC retain the Tshwane metro in the 3 August local elections, she would be the new mayor.

Protesters vowed to continue on their destructive path until the ANC reversed the naming of Didiza as mayoral candidate for the capital.

Tania du Preez from the Pretoria Crime and Accident Group confirmed on Tuesday afternoon that police are preparing to fire tear gas in Booysens if the situation worsens. “We are waiting for police to confirm in which areas. We will keep the community updated.”
