Education department concerned about future of pupils
The Gauteng department of education says violence must not jeopardise the future of pupils.
The Gauteng department of education has raised concerns about violence causing a disruption to schooling in Pretoria and imperilling pupils’ futures.
The department said it was worried that when communities in Mamelodi, Attridgeville, Mabopane and Hammanskraal protested, schools became targets and this affected learning.
The department said some part-time matriculants had been unable to write their senior certificate examinations, which were ongoing, when the protests started.
The department had been in discussion with the department of basic education to schedule an appropriate time for pupils who missed their exams to rewrite them.
It said backup examination papers were for eventualities such as protests.
“In terms of examinations for other grades, the districts, in collaboration with the principals, will revise the timetable to accommodate affected subjects,” said the department of education.
“So far we have not received any negative reports from schools in all affected areas. We are however, working closely with the local police to monitor the situation and intervene where necessary.”
The department instructed patrollers to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities around the schools instantly to the principals, day or night.
It appealed to residents and School Governing Bodies (SGBs) to assist in safeguarding schools, “so that the future of our pupils is not placed in jeopardy”.
