Shops in the west re-opened after looting
Shop-owners were forced to close their doors as protesters in the west caused havoc.
Shop owners in the Daspoort and surrounding areas have opened their doors again after the unrest that took place over the past days.
Several shops were forced to close their doors on Tuesday when angry protesters started looting shops.
Protest action started in Pretoria after the ANC announced Thoko Didiza as the mayoral candidate for Tshwane.
According to a resident the situation in the area is back to normal, but they still fear that the protesting might continue for the rest of the week and they might have to close shop again.
Annellie Sutton, the owner of RO Waters in Moot Street, said she was told by the police to close the shop on Tuesday for safety reasons.
Sutton’s shop has re-opened after the unrest.
Theo Slabbert, the owner of the coke factory in Booysens who also had to close their doors for the day, decided to hand out free cokes to the community in the hope of maintaining the peace.
On Tuesday morning Pretorians were greeted with billows of smoke, prompted by anger at the ANC‘s choice of a mayoral candidate for the local poll.
Many ANC protesters took to the streets, vowing only to back down once they had gotten their way.
They wanted the ANC to reverse its choice of former cabinet minister Thoko Didiza above incumbent mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa.
Tyres were set alight, buses torched, roads barricaded and shops looted. Several shops in the CBD were also closed due to the protesting.
Things have now calmed down all over the city.
