Shop owner arrested for unlicensed firearm and ammunition

A 34-year-old shop owner was arrested in Mamelodi for possession of an unlicensed firearm and live ammunition on Thursday.
Police spokesperson Constable Connie Moganedi said police were tipped off by a source that the man was in possession of a firearm.
“We went to the shop and requested to search the premises. We found a man, believed to be the shop owner, with a firearm and live ammunition in his possession,” she said.
Moganedi said the immigrant failed to provide a licence for the firearm.
“We arrested the man and confiscated his firearm and live ammunition. He is expected to appear in the Mamelodi Magistrate’s Court soon.
Mamelodi East police head of Vispol Colonel Lekganyane applauded the police for their work and warned criminals not to make Mamelodi their playground.
“The men and women in blue will not rest until Mamelodi is peaceful and transformed. We want criminals to know that Mamelodi is a no go area for them,” said Lekganyane.
Meanwhile, an eNCA journalist and camerawoman were robbed of their camera equipment in Mamelodi on Wednesday evening.

In a tweet, journalist Jody Jacobs said he and his colleague Thando Hlope had just finished shooting a live newsfeed when they were approached by three men who took their equipment.

Jacobs tweeted that the men also pointed a gun at Hlope.
The men were allegedly driving a silver Honda Ballade, but Jacobs said he could not see the car’s registration number.

No one was injured and a case was opened at Mamelodi police station.

The police confirmed the incident on their Twitter page but were unavailable for comment.
