Two found dead in Mabopane mall
The bodies of two people were found at Central City in Mabopane on Thursday.
Two bodies have been found in Central City, Mabopane, as unrest continued on Thursday.
Tshwane metro police spokesperson Console Tleane said police would investigate.
“It is safe to say for now that the deaths do appear to be linked to the unrest,” he said.
The two bodies were found after the shopping centre was looted.
Tleane said the metro had been unable to collect refuse in Mabopane, Soshanguve, Ga-Rankuwa, Atteridgeville, and Hammanskraal because of the unrest and apologised to residents for the inconvenience.
He said the workers were ready to resume normal activity once it was safe to do so.
By midday on Thursday, the situation was relatively calm and clean-up operations had started in the violence epicentres Mabopane, Soshanguve, Mamelodi, Atteridgeville and Hammanskraal.
But it was reported that cleap-up staff were prevented from removing the burned out bus shells from the streets.
Tleane said the metro would ensure that disruption of services was minimised and that the Tshwane metro police and the SAPS maintained their presence in all affected areas.
“The metro calls on residents to continue to exercise vigilance and caution, without panicking. We also call on residents and businesses not to rely on information SMSes and other forms of communication [unreliable chain information] other than official channels. It has been found that most of the information being spread is misleading and malicious,” he said.
Meanwhile, Police spokesperson Colonel Noxolo Kweza said more than 150 people have been arrested as of Wednesday night until this today.
“This brings the number of people arrested close to 200. They are charged with public violence, possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition, possession of stolen property and malicious damage to property. They will appear at different courts in due course.”
She said the situation was and is still calm but tense in some of the areas. Pockets of looting occurred last night especially in the Tshwane North area. Police are appealing for calm and are continuing to monitor the situation all over Tshwane.
