Woman escapes from burning car
Mother tells of seconds anxiety when her daughter escaped from a car on fire.
A woman narrowly escaped death at the weekend when her car caught fire in a crash on the N1-south in Erasmusrand.
Her mother, who asked not to be named, said a stationery vehicle caused a multiple-vehicle crash near Rigel Avenue.
It was parked in the right-hand lane of the highway.
The mother said her daughter was driving behind a bakkie on Saturday morning before the accident.
“My daughter suddenly saw cars swerve to the side and crashed into the bakkie, ultimately landing near the barrier lines. At that moment her car was on fire.”
She said a woman behind her daughter’s car acted quickly and helped her out of the burning vehicle.
“At that moment the windscreen was sizzling due to the heat of the blaze.”
She said her daughter inhaled a lot of smoke.
“My daughter lost her marriage certificate and other valuables which were in the back seat,” said the mother.
“It was a stationery car changing a tyre in the right lane that caused all this mayhem.”
Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said medics and Tshwane emergency services arrived at the scene around 11:23 and found a car engulfed in flames.
“The female driver suffered smoke inhalation and received treatment on scene before medics transported her to a nearby hospital,” said Botha.
