Cop shot and killed

Police have launched a manhunt after four men shot and killed a police constable in Diepsloot.

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS) page, two officers were fixing a flat tyre in Diepsloot on Tuesday evening around 20:00 when they were approached by four men.

“Two police officers from Diepsloot were changing a flat tyre when they were allegedly confronted by four suspects. The suspects fired shots and one policeman was hit in the upper body. He died on his way to the hospital,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini.

“The suspects then robbed them (the officers) of their firearms before fleeing the scene on foot.”

Dlamini later said the other police officer was not hurt. The officers were on duty when they were attacked.

Metro police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said violent protests started in Diepsloot on Tuesday evening.
“Around 21:30 last night, the Diepsloot residents started throwing stones and burning tyres on the main road (R511).”

By Wednesday morning however, the situation had calmed down.

The violence had cleared on the R511, but traffic was slow.
Minnar could not confirm the cause of the protest.

Dlamini could not confirm whether the shooting was linked to the protest action.

The police are appealing to residents to assist with information.

Anyone who supplies information that may lead to the arrest and conviction of these suspects may be rewarded.
