Justice trio arrested over bribes
The three obtained bribes of more than R50 000.
Two state attorneys and a justice clerk were arrested on Wednesday for apparently accepting bribes.
Independent interpreters, usually called in by a clerk of the court to render services, were allegedly forced to pay the three culprits to secure assignments.
More than R50 000 had apparently been paid in bribes to the two attorneys and the financial clerk.
“A clerk would facilitate the payments to the interpreters’ accounts and in turn they (interpreters) would be ordered to redirect the payments to their (the clerk and attorneys’) accounts,” the police said.
This was happening over a period of three years.
The police became aware of the matter when the interpreters complained.
The three culprits were arrested by the Hawks’ Anti-Corruption Unit and would appear in the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crime Court on Thursday.
The police said anyone who fell victim to the scheme could call Captain Warmberg on 072-580-2469.
