Twelve charged over Kameeldrift violence
During violent protests, vehicles and houses were burned and two people were allegedly killed.
Twelve people appeared in the Cullinan Magistrate’s Court on Friday in connection with violent protests in Kameeldrift two months ago.
Police spokesperson Lt-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said they faced charges of murder, arson, malicious damage to property and public violence.
During the violence, vehicles and houses were set alight and two people were killed in Walmansthal informal settlement at the end of May.
The arrests came after police launched a manhunt for those involved in the violence.
“The suspects aged between 18 and 51 were arrested for their involvement in violent protests where 11 dwellings were burned down and seven vehicles set alight in Haakdoringlaagte informal settlement.”
Five people were arrested on 20 June while three handed themselves over to police, Dlamini said.
“The other four suspects including a minor were arrested on Wednesday.”
The minor, a 15-year-old boy, was released into his parents’ custody.
Dlamini said the matter was postponed to 6 August.
“As more investigations are continuing, more suspects may be arrested.”
