Do not be a victim of cash robberies
If you need to pay accounts, consider other, low-risk options, rather than withdrawing large sums of money.
Residents have been warned against making large cash withdrawals.
Lyttleton police Warrant Officer Hero Gumbu said the warning came after a plasterer was robbed of R85 000 cash at a primary school in Pretoria last week Friday.
Gumbu said people should always consider other, low-risk options, rather than withdrawing large sums of money.
Gumbu provided the following tips:
– Carry as little cash as possible
– Consider the convenience of paying your accounts electronically (consult your bank about other options)
– Consider cellphone banking or internet transfers to do your banking.
People who run businesses that are cash-based and who need to deposit money regularly, should apply the following measures to minimise the risk of becoming robbery victims:
– Alternate the days and times you deposit cash
– Never make your bank visits public, even to people close to you
– Do not openly display the money you are depositing while in the bank queue
– Avoid carrying money bags, briefcases or openly displaying your deposit receipt book
– Identify another branch nearby you can visit to ensure your banking pattern is not easily recognisable or detected
– If the amount of cash you are regularly depositing increases as your business grows, consider using the services of a cash management company
– Refrain from handing out wages to contract or casual labourers in full view of the public. Rather make use of wage accounts provided by your bank
– Refrain from driving to the bank in your company branded vehicle on payday
– Consider arranging for electronic transfers of wages to your contract or casual labourers
If you are a member of a cash savings club or stokvels, members should take note of the following:
– Refrain from making cash deposits of club member contributions on high-risk days like Mondays after month end
– Ensure people depositing club cash contributions or making withdrawals are accompanied by another club member
– A stokvel, savings club or burial society can arrange for members to deposit cash directly into the club’s account instead of collecting cash contributions
– Arrange for the club pay-outs to be electronically transferred into each club member’s personal account or accounts of their choice
