Suspected hijackers shot in police shoot-out

Three hijackers were shot and arrested during a shoot-out with police between Pretoria and Krugersdorp on Thursday morning.

Emer-G-Med spokesperson Braam Kruger said the arrest happened around 07:50 on the N14 at the petroport between the R511 and R512.

“Paramedics arrived on the scene and found a heavy police presence with a police helicopter circling overhead, searching for the suspected hijackers.”

“The suspected stolen bakkie was found in a veld a distance away from the highway. The driver allegedly drove off-road in an attempt to flee.”

Kruger said the police spotted the bakkie on the N14 highway, but the driver was not on the scene.

“The three suspects noticed the police and opened fire. A shoot-out ensued and the suspects attempted to flee.”

“The three men were injured during the shoot-out. One was shot in the chest and required rapid advanced life support intervention.”

The second hijacker was shot in the leg, and the third sustained a bullet graze.

Kruger said two suspects were treated on the scene, before being transported to hospital under police guard.

“The SA Police Services did an impeccable job and managed to arrest all of the suspected hijackers.”

The highway was closed, and there are still heavy delays approaching the scene due to police investigations.
