Tips for shoppers to stay out of harm’s way during armed robberies

Police have advised shoppers not to confront armed robbers when caught up in an armed robbery.
They have also advised shoppers to stay safe during robberies. This follows a shooting at Brooklyn mall on Thursday that left a man wounded.
Police spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubela said the man apparently tried to stop three armed robbers after they had stolen almost R1 million from a coin shop in the mall.
According to the police the shopper saw the men fleeing and confronted them.
“The suspects shot him in the upper body and robbed him of his firearm before fleeing the mall.”
Emer-G-med spokesperson Braam Kruger said the man was in a critical condition after advanced life-support paramedics stabilised him.
He was rushed to hospital.
Police offered a few tips on what shoppers should do, if ever in a similar situation.
Police spokesperson Makhubela said:
– People should submit themselves to the demands of perpetrators
– They should avoid alerting for help by screaming
– Shoppers should not try to play hero and fight off the criminals
– Shoppers should stay calm at all times
He said these tips would be useful in avoiding any harm.
