Man charged with perjury
Police caught the man after having investigated his false report of theft out of a vehicle.
A 31-year-old man was arrested for perjury and theft after reporting that someone had stolen from his vehicle.
On Thursday Garsfontein police caught the man after having investigated his false report of theft out of a vehicle.
”The man reported a theft out of motor vehicle last month. He alleged his company computer and cellphone had been taken from the vehicle,” police spokesperson Warrant Officer Dave Miller said.
“Through investigation it was established that the suspect had in fact sold the property and falsely reported his vehicle was broken into. Investigation also revealed the man had stolen equipment worth thousands from his company.”
Miller said the man sold the stolen property to pawnshops in Mpumulanga and the Free State.
“The station commander of Garsfontein police, Colonel Andrew Lesch, warned that the South African Police Service will not tolerate the abuse of the legal system for personal gain,” Miller said.
Miller said complaints of theft out of motor vehicles were particularly screened because people often reported these cases to lay false insurance claims. Lesch said the police will not hesitate to bring those people to justice.
The man was scheduled to appear in the Hatfield Magistrate’s Court Friday.
