Weekend arrests stand at 138
Suspects arrested for various crimes in city centre to appear in court soon.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Tshwane central cluster increased their operational capacity during the July school holidays with the focus on property and drug related crimes.
Police arrested 138 suspects for various crimes committed at the weekend in the Tshwane central cluster (Sunnyside, Silverton, Brooklyn, Garsfontein, Villieria, Pretoria Moot and Lyttelton police stations).
During operations and patrols between Friday and Sunday, the following arrests were made: two for housebreaking and theft, 10 for theft and shoplifting, three for fraud, four for common assault, one for possession of stolen property, one for possession of a stolen vehicle and 69 for less serious crimes such as urinating in public.
“Drugs and alcohol remain a major contributory factor to serious crimes such as domestic violence, assault, rape and murder,” said police spokesperson Captain Colette Weilbach.
“The SAPS has a zero tolerance policy towards these types of offences. Over the weekend 18 arrests were made for driving under the influence of alcohol, 10 for possession of dagga and 19 for possession of other drugs.”
Weilbach said the Tshwane central cluster will continue with concentrated efforts to combat crime in the various areas.
