UPDATE: Terrified passengers still on grounded plane
Passengers who are being kept on board a grounded Airlink aircraft for more than two hours are at Wonderboom Airport believe they are part of a hi-jacking drama.
Petrified passengers who have been stranded on the tarmac at Wonderboom Airport for more than two hours believe they are being kept in the dark about exactly what is happening.
They believe their plane has been hijacked.
Miranda Ramashala telephoned Rekord from inside the plane and said passengers had been told there is a technical problem.
“We do not believe the pilot. We are very frightened and believe it is in fact a hijacking,” Ramashala said.
Flight SA8678 departed Cape Town at 10.00 this morning bound for Wonderboom.
When the aircraft landed – very far from the terminal and other aircraft – passengers were not allowed to disembark.
According to the Tshwane metro, which owns and operates Wonderboom Airport, it is definitely not a hijacking, merely a case of restraint of an unruly passenger.
“Passengers are being kept on board until such time as the police remove the unruly passenger,” Tshwane spokesman Blessing Manale said.
He said the exact nature of the passenger’s action was not known at the time.
Ramashala told Rekord the claim of a technical problem did not ring true, as the aircraft was meant to land at Wonderboom Airport in any case.
“We are also parked miles away from anything,” she said.
