Cops reach for dreams
Police, Reach for a Dream Foundation and Hi Risk Unit are set to put together a fun day for children for Mandela Day.
As part of Mandela Day, Brooklyn and Garsfontein police are putting together a fun day for children suffering from life-threatening illnesses.
The event will be held at Pretoria Boy’s High School in Brooklyn on 16 July.
Police spokesperson Colette Weilbach said police would be assisted by the Reach for a Dream Foundation and Hi Risk Unit.
She said the event would be a fun day for children to make their dreams come true.
“The foundation believes in inspiring hope and fulfilling dreams for children. Through these dreams, the foundation wants to create magical moments for the children that will last a lifetime.”
Weilbach said fulfilling children’s dreams inspired hope and courage in the dreamer and helped them believe that tomorrow was worth fighting for.
“As part of the 67 minutes for Mandela Day outreach project, it would be such an honour for everyone involved to make a dream come true for the children who are diagnosed with a life-threatening illnesses.”
Weilbach said Brooklyn and Garsfontein police and Hi Risk Unit would play a big role in creating magical moments for the children on the day.
“This will be done with a tactical response demonstration for police officers and other role players working together in the fight against rhino poaching,” she said.
“The children will be part of a ‘movie-making-moment’ in which the police and other role players must ‘save the rhinos’. Sirens, smoke and fake gunshots together with police vehicles, choppers, dog tackles and medical response teams will all form part of this ‘high action movie’.”
The public was invited to attend and support the day.
Weilbach said the gates and food stalls would open at 10:00 and entrance was free.
“Visitors can enjoy a strong man and kick-boxing demonstration and other entertainment before and after the main event.”
“The anti-rhino poaching demonstration will take place at 12:00. ”
All children would have the opportunity to meet the response team after the demonstration on the day with photo opportunity at police vehicles and the chopper.
Slipper Day stickers would also be available for purchasing in support of the Reach for a Dream Foundation’s aim in making dreams come true.
