Team SA aims for 10 medals
South Africa is a medal away from winning 10 medals at the Rio Olympics.
Team South Africa’s 10 medal target for the 2016 Olympics might well be within reach.
This seemed like a big ask after the SA team only brought home six medals in 2012, but with two days left of the Olympic Games in Rio, the SA team currently has nine medals.
Sunette Viljoen brought the team one step closer to their goal on Friday when she won silver after her 64.9m throw in the women’s javelin.
The SA team is currently in 35th place on the overall table thanks to Wayde van Niekerk winning gold in his record-breaking run in the 400m.
On Thursday, the SA team won its eighth medal when Henri Schoeman finished third in the men’s triathlon to claim bronze.
The real medal hopeful is Caster Semenya, who will take part in the women’s 800m final on Sunday morning. She is a favourite to win SA’s second gold medal.
If all goes well, SA could come back from the Olympics with 11 medals as Anél Oosthuizen still has to compete in the 20km walk on Saturday afternoon.
Thanks to Schoeman and the Blitzboks, team South Africa are bringing back two bronze medals so far.
The country’s six silver medals were won by Chad le Clos (2), Cameron van der Burgh, Luvo Manyonga, Sunette Viljoen and the rowing team of Lawrence Brittain and Shaun Keeling.
Wayde van Niekerk is the only gold medallist so far.
