145 arrested in police operation
The police also provided motorists with safety tips in an attempt to decrease crime.
Tshwane Central Cluster police undertook crime combating operations at all seven of their stations this past week.
During these operations 145 people were arrested for crimes including attempted murder, armed robbery, common robbery, shoplifting, drunkenness, illegal immigration, possession of drugs, possession of housebreaking equipment and attempted theft.
According to Villieria police spokesperson Captain Coba Brits some crimes needed to be addressed urgently.
These crimes included theft of motor vehicles, theft out of motor vehicles, housebreaking, common robberies, armed robberies, common assaults and assault with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm.
“We urge the public to assist with crime prevention in the areas were they stay,” said Brits.
The police provided the following safety tips for all motorists:
– Ensure your vehicle is always in a good condition
– Always make sure your vehicle has enough fuel and that your cellphone is charged
– Do not leave valuable items like packages, cellphones, handbags and laptops in a visible place in the vehicle, rather lock them in the boot
– Keep all doors locked and all windows closed
– Always park in a well-lit and safe place
– Avoid driving in the dark as much as possible. The times that should be avoided if possible are between 18:00 and 22:00
– Do not pick up hitch-hikers
– If you are being followed, drive straight to the nearest police station
– Be cautious if someone approaches your vehicle and do not open your window
– Keep a list of emergency numbers in your vehicle
– When you come to a stop at a traffic light or stop street be alert at all times
“The public must work with the police. This is the only way we can ensure a decrease in crime,” said Brits.
“The police are urging residents to take care of themselves and their belongings during the upcoming festive season. Business owners must be alert and ensure the safety of their clients.”
