Man nabbed smuggling drugs to accomplice
An Eersterust man was arrested trying to smuggle drugs to his arrested accomplice.
A man was arrested for trying to smuggle drugs into a police station.
The 32 years old from Eersterust was trying to smuggle the drugs into the holding cells of the Mamelodi East police station on Saturday evening.
He had concealed his stash in a hair shampoo bottle.
Police spokesperson Captain Michael Mbewe said the man pretended to be bringing toiletries to a friend held there but had missed the visiting hours.
“The police became suspicious and upon searching him, found a powdery substance resembling drugs in the shampoo bottle,” said Mbewe.
“The man was immediately arrested.
“He must have thought he would smuggle the drugs in then go home a free man but unfortunately was mistaken.”
Mbewe said it later emerged the “friend” had been the man’s accomplice in a crime but he couldn’t give more information about what crime the men had committed or whether the inmate dealt drugs in the cells.
He said all products or change of clothes brought to inmates were searched thoroughly to make sure no weapons or illegal substances were smuggled into holding cells.
“The man will soon appear before a Mamelodi magistrate on a charge of possession of drugs,” he said.
The investigation continues.
