NEWSFLASH: Police pounce on man following armed robbery
An armed trio ambushed two people in a Centurion parking lot.
Rapid response by police led to the arrest of an armed robber in Centurion on Thursday afternoon.
Lyttelton police spokesperson Captain Dave Miller said a man was arrested in possession of a stolen cellphone taken during an armed robbery in West Street around 11:00.
Miller said an armed trio travelling in a white Polo ambushed a man and a woman in a parking lot who were on their way to a meeting in West Street.
“The attackers took a cellphone from the male driver and jewellery from the female passenger,” said Miller.
He said the men fled in the white Polo.
Miller said the police tracing task team from Lyttelton, the crime prevention unit and charge office staff traced the cellphone Olifantsfontein by around 14:00.
“Quick reaction by the officers led them to a minibus taxi in Olifantsfontein. Police stopped the Quantum minibus taxi and searched the vehicle.”
Miller said the phone was found in a man’s possession who was then arrested.
“The man claimed he found the phone,” Miller said.
Miller said the man was arrested for possession of stolen property and a profile on the man would be done to check whether he could be linked to other offences.
“Police were investigating to see if the man would be linked to other armed robberies.”
Miller said no firearms were recovered in the Quantum.
The man would appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court within 48 hours.
