Robberies continue to be a concern in the north
Police say they have experienced a number of robberies around most footpaths in the past few days.
Police are urging Ga-Rankuwa residents north of Pretoria to avoid footpaths and shortcuts. This follows a resurgence of armed robberies and muggings in the area.
Tshwane North Cluster police warned they have experienced a number of robberies around most footpaths in the past few days.
“Residents are warned not to use shortcuts whenever they travel, especially when they carry valuables or money,” said police spokesperson Mathews Nkoadi.
He said the road between Ga-Rankuwa Magistrate’s Court and Zone 3, and the road between Zone 15 and Zone 8 have recently been identified as hotspots for robberies.
“The robbers are targeting unsuspecting residents who are walking alone from the shops or work,” he said.
Nkoadi said in all robberies a firearm or knife is used.
He said although police would increase visibility and patrols around the affected areas, it was the responsibility of residents to be careful at all times.
A woman told Rekord she had a shocking experience on Tuesday, when she was confronted by an armed robber on her way to work.
She was stopped by a man with a black and silver firearm who took her cellphone.
He also demanded a laptop but she didn’t own one.
Another woman was also robbed at gunpoint walking across Zone 3 to catch a taxi.
Two men threatened her with a firearm and took her bag.
A resident said he saw a woman and five men using a firearm to rob someone.
They then turned their attention to him and stole his bag.
“Residents are requested to inform us of any criminal activities by calling our Crime Stop number 0800010111 or sending an SMS to our Crime line 32211,” Nkoadi said.
Police management is also calling upon people to report any misconduct and/or any criminal activities by their members.
Information may be forwarded to the provincial duty brigadier (082 313 8299) and a provincial duty general (082 444 4354) at all hours.
