Teenage cable thief busted red handed

“The police approached him and made the arrest.”

A teenage boy was arrested for copper theft in Silverton on Wednesday.

The 16-year-old was caught in the act trying to steal the cables from a geyser outside a residence in Silverton extension 5.

Silverton police spokesperson Captain Jan Sepato said the teenager was spotted by the resident.

“The resident immediately notified the police on the community Eyewatch Emergency Whatsapp group.”

Sepato said within minutes the police were at the property and the teenager tried to flee in vain.

He said the police have linked the 16-year-old to a common robbery case in Mamelodi two years ago.

Sepato said the teenager would appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court this week, and applauded the resident for the quick reaction that led to the arrest.

He said the arrest proved that communication between the police, CPFs and the community was important to fighting crime.
