More smartphones to no longer be supported by WhatsApp

Find out if you will need to upgrade your phone model this December.

Smartphones using old software will soon no longer be supported by the Facebook-owned WhatsApp.

WhatsApp said this would apply to older phones such as iPhone 3GS, Windows Phone 7 devices and phones running on Android 2.1 or 2.2.

The older smartphone platforms could no longer keep up with the latest features being rolled out for the app.

The phase-out would affect Windows, Android and iOS by the end of the year

WhatsApp said if a user was using an old smartphone to send WhatsApp messages, a phone upgrade was needed to continue with the service.

“This was a tough decision for us to make, but the right one in order to give people better ways to keep in touch with friends, family and loved ones using WhatsApp,” said the company in a statement.
