SPCA: Respect animal rights this season
“Please be a responsible pet owner and citizen, do not light fire crackers near animals.”
The SPCA has appealed to residents to respect animals’ rights during the festive season.
SPCA spokesperson Inspector Mishack Matlou said people who did not obey the Animal Protection Act and set off fireworks this festive season could face the might of the law.
Matlou said the SPCA opposed fireworks in the strongest terms and anyone found in contravention of the act would be reported and arrested.
“Remember, a dog’s hearing is 10 times better than a human’s, so if a dog hears a cracker go off, it sounds like a bomb,” said Matlou.
“Please be a responsible pet owner… be a responsible citizen, do not light fire crackers near animals.”
SPCA urges public to get proof of animal cruelty
Matlou appealed to pet owners going away for holidays to ask their neighbours or people they trust to take care of their animals.
“It is against the law to leave a dog chained without food or water,” he said.
Matlou urged people to report stray dogs to the SPCA during this festive season.
He also asked owners not to leave pets inside cars.
“Just leave your pets at home when you go shopping. Please don’t go shopping with any pet, as it can die inside the car.”
“Whether windows are open or not heatstroke can kill any animal.”

Matlou said his wish was that people would celebrate by dancing, singing or blowing vuvuzelas instead of lighting fireworks.
