Soshanguve elderly benefit from local NPO

The SSCF helps the elderly to take part in activities to restore their honour and dignity.

An organisation in Soshanguve empowers the elderly and protects their rights.

The Soshanguve Senior Citizen Forum (SSCF), founded in 2008, provides care and support to Soshanguve residents over 60.

Chairperson Magritte Ledwaba said the aim was to restore the elderly’s honour and dignity.

“We make sure we are there for them so they do not feel lonely,” said Ledwaba.

Ledwaba said the elderly took part in various activities, including exercise, hand work, soccer, singing and drama.

There was also a platform for the elderly to share their views and encourage one another.

The group’s sports, arts and culture coordinator Mariam Sibeko said: “We try by all means to get them to do activities and enjoy themselves as elders.”

The department of social development also assisted by providing breakfast and lunch for special events.

Elizabeth Mabaso, a member, said she had been part of the organisation for more than five years.

Mabaso recently ran a 400m race as part of her goal to keep healthy.

Another member, Beggie Legodu (65) said: “The organisation helps us remember to take our medication. They send social workers and nurses weekly, to check on our wellbeing.”

Betty Sindani, a resident of Block R, said she was grateful such an organisation existed to assist the elderly.

The forum also runs projects to improve the lives of the elderly with other organisations, such as A Re Tshwaraneng and Ke Ka Mohau.
