Councillor shapes Sunnyside youth through career expo

“We make it easy for people to access these companies and NGOs by bringing them here.”

Harambee held a career expo for youth in Sunnyside on Friday.

The NGO is an employer initiative and provides first-time workers job training.

Organiser, Councillor Godfrey Mulaudzi said he wanted to give residents of Sunnyside especially the youth sound career advice.

The event attracted learners from Pretoria and Tshwane Secondary School.

Mulaudzi told Rekord: “We want to stop the loitering of young people who do little to empower themselves by going to libraries to learn about which career they’re best suited for.

“We make it easy for them by bringing them here.”

Mulaudzi said the event would birth other programmes aimed at curbing crime, “which was mostly committed by high school dropouts”.

“I am glad that the councillor thought of such an initiative,” said Zimbabwean Paul Ndlozi.

“Most of us don’t have smart phones, so it’s hard to get on to a website and we are not allowed to go into these libraries as they need some ID which I don’t have as I am a foreigner,” he said.

“We can’t access information and options.”

Unisa and Boston College attended the event to explain their programmes, the Department of Arts and Culture gave attendees information on career options in the arts.
