BRT makes life easier for the disabled
“There will be no charge for children under the age of three, traveling with an adult as long as they don’t take up a seat.”
Tshwane metro has introduced concessions for people living with disabilities using the bus rapid transit system, A Re Yeng.
“To qualify for the concession they have to submit relevant documents requested at registration points, such as ID or birth certificate,” said MMC for transport Sheila Lynn Senkubuge.
“They will be issued a green card which is similar to the learner concessions card,” she said.
Learners and people living with disabilities will pay a flat fee of R7 a trip.

“Children under the age of three travel free on the buses if with a guardian and do not take up a seat of their own.
“Pensioners between the ages of 60 to 64 get a 25 percent discount on standard adult fares during off-peak hours and those 65 and older travel for free during off-peak hours,” Senkubuge said.
Only South African citizens qualify for concessions, which are valid for 12 months, she said.
The bus service was introduced in Pretoria in December 2014 and has two main routes – 2A between the CBD and Hatfield has five feeder routes servicing the CBD, Sunnyside, Steve Biko hospital, Groenkloof, Bosman street and Marabastad.

At the end of June, A Re Yeng completed the first phase of the line from Church Square to Wonderboom.
“The full operations on the CBD-Wonderboom line will get underway with the completion of the Belle Ombre bus depot and the finalisation of the Wonderboom interchange facility and related contractual processes,” Senkubuge said.
There are plans to extend the service to other townships such as Atteridgeville, depending on funding from the Department of Transport.
The metro has made an infrastructure investment of R880 million since the inception of the service, which now has 114 buses and 131 drivers.
