UPDATE: Tshwane officials cycle through city

Car-free Friday to become permanent in Tshwane.

Tshwane metro officials went car-free on Friday, 20 October.

This was part of the car-free Fridays and Green Mobility Fridays initiatives, which fell during transport month.

Tshwane MMC for roads and transport, Sheila-Lynn Senkubuge said the initiative, aimed at reducing carbon emissions, was met with “good effort”.

“If you look at Hatfield, there was no congestion today. People were walking, cycling or taking taxis,” she said.

Senkubuge said she was hoping car-free Fridays would become permanent for the city.

“We started in Hatfield but we will identify new spots in the city,” she said.

She told Rekord that neighbourhoods, where the next phase of car-free Friday would be rolled out, were within the central parts of the City.

“Town and Sunnyside,” Senkubunge said in part.

Previously, Senkubunge told Rekord that although public transport was not as enjoyable as commuting by one’s own cars, it would ease congestion, reduce emissions and give people plenty of quality time with domestic and workplace neighbours.

Mayor Solly Msimanga said the Tshwane Green Ride initiative was to highlight the safety, and the health benefits of non-motorised transport for the daily commute.
