A water reservoir in the north of Pretoria was being repaired on Wednesday afternoon after an overflow caused a flash flood in Wonderboom.
City of Tshwane spokesperson Selby Bokaba said the reservoir in Annlin suffered damage following the break-in and theft of control circuits in the early hours.

“The damage resulted in water flooding some private residential properties on the downstream side of the reservoir, causing major damage.”

Bokaba said a telemetry system failed to give warning as it was damaged during the break-in.
It was believed that the thieves gained entrance to the control room by tampering with the locking system.
“The City’s plumbers had to manually close all the isolating valves on the supply pipe to the reservoir in order to stop the supply of water to the reservoir,” he said.
“However, the incident has not affected the supply of water to consumers and there were no injuries or fatalities reported.”
Tshwane Emergency Services spokesperson Johan Pieterse said the reservoir overflowed, which led to a flash flood.
“Three houses were flooded and some gardens and garages were damaged by the massive amount of water,” said Pieterse.
The reservoir is a water source to the following suburbs:
- Wonderboom
- Annlin
- Sinoville
- Rooiwal reservoir
- Bon Accord
The repairs were expected to be completed by 18h00.
