Mabopane social market promotes local artists

A Mabopane-based NGO hosted a free social market to enable local artists to showcase their artwork and meet with entrepreneurs.

Residents of Mabopane came in their numbers on Saturday to support local artists during a social market at Matseke Primary School.

The residents woke up to great music and a variety of bright colours as artists displayed their crafts at the block B school.

Lesedi La Batho, a nongovernmental organisation hosted its first social market “to help local artists market their brands”.

On the day, residents were glued to their seats as various artists – models, singers and dancers – performed.

Event organiser, Sibongiseni Sibewu said: “We are doing this for the community and more events are yet to come. Since there are a high number of artists in townships, we intend to allow artists to show people the kind of work that they do. We want their brands to be recognised in order for them to be able to generate income.”

Fashion designer, Simphiwe Msibi said it was not every day artists’ work was acknowledged.

“I believe through such occasions society will respect and support our work,” he explained.

Lesedi CEO Mondo Mashilo said some of the artists that showcased their work were from the centre.

“We have entrepreneurs at the centre namely from sewing and beading classes. These people are then given a platform to exhibit their craft,” said Mashilo.

Mabopane resident, Kelebogile Mogolane said she appreciated the event as it united people and took the youth off the streets.

“Instead of the youth busy engaging in fruitless activities, through such events they are able to invest time on their talents,” said Mogolane.
