TUT banned from hosting Varsity Cup games
Angry TUT supporters invaded the pitch after Tuks defeated them 2-0 in the Varsity Cup final.
The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) has been banned for 12 months from hosting the Varsity Cup soccer matches at home following crowd violence at last year’s final.
TUT supporters invaded the pitch during their team’s 2-0 defeat to neighbours Tuks in September last year forcing players, coaching staff and match officials to dash for the cover of the change-rooms.
Violence broke out after the 85th minute when Tuks scored their second goal to win the title.
Several people had been injured by the time the police restored the calm.

This week, TUT confirmed all their Varsity Cup games would be played away from home.
“The misbehaviour of students and disruption of games led to this sanction. TUT will not host any home games for the next 12 months.
The university was also hit with a R100 000 penalty.
“TUT management appeals to students and supporters to adhere to the order to have the suspension lifted for the 2019 competition. This year, we celebrate 15 years of existence, let us work together to ensure we are welcomed back as spectators, supporters and followers in full support of our respected football teams.”
TUT vice-chancellor and principal professor Lourens van Staden had earlier said the crowd’s behaviour was unacceptable.
“Fans invaded the pitch with approximately six minutes remaining and the game was subsequently stopped. There should always be a healthy competition at sports games, but this regress into violent behaviour and damage to property is unacceptable,” he had said.
The 2018 Varsity football league runs from 26 July to 27 September.
