This year’s show will be held at Waterkloof Airforce Base from 19-23 September, with the annual expo taking place on the final two days.

Visitors to this year’s Africa Aerospace and Defence air show are urged to be vigilant to avoid falling victim to crime.

This year’s show will be held at Waterkloof Airforce Base from 19-23 September, with the annual expo taking place on the final two days.

Only the Saturday and Sunday will be open to the public, with gates opening from 05:00 and the shows held from 08:00 through to 17:00.

Marketed as the only air show of its kind, combining a show together with a trade exhibition, the show will see visitors from across the globe making their way to Centurion.

The show is Africa’s only exhibition featuring defence and aerospace industries.

It combines air, sea and land technologies along with a static aircraft display and the air show.

Police spokesperson Captain Dave Miller said despite comprehensive security measures, crime can still be an issue.

“Security, military and police personnel will be on site during the public days to ensure the safety of the public,” said Miller.

He said alcohol brought into the event will not be tolerated.

“There will be venues on the base where alcohol will be sold and you can purchase from those venues only,” said Miller.

The decision was also made that no gazebos and alcohol will be allowed in the parking areas.

“Parking zones are public spaces and if you are found to be drinking in them, you will be dealt with according to the law,” said Miller.

No radios for personal use will be allowed into the base. Anyone found with such a radio will see it confiscated.

Parents with small children are urged to keep an eye on their little ones to ensure that they do not get lost.

“If it happens that children do get lost, there will be a facility where lost kids will be kept. It is always a good idea to provide a small child with a name tag together with your contact details,” said Miller.

Anyone visiting the high sites or site-seeing points around the base are also urged to be vigilant, as crime does happen in these areas.

He said no drones will be allowed to fly in the area.

“Under normal circumstances, no drone is allowed to fly within a 10km radius of any airport. This isn’t any different,” said Miller.

“If drones are located, the show will have to be stopped and aircraft redirected to other areas until drones are confiscated.”

The road between the intersection of Solomon Mahlangu Drive and the R21 all the way to Trichardt Road will be closed.

“The intersections will be manned by metro police who will reroute traffic to alternate routes. Four park and ride opportunities are also available,” said Miller.
