UPDATE: ‘The world was burning around me’ – north inferno victim

The pensioner's neighbour had rescued his dog and all seven of her new-born pups.

A Bultfontein resident this week shared his experiences with Rekord of a massive fire that destroyed two homes as it raged through the area on Sunday.

Two people were also hospitalised after residents tried to keep the destructive flames from reaching their homes.

Resident Michael Arthur (72) lost all of his belongings in the fire.

“I just grabbed my cat and ran before the house was engulfed in flames,” Arthur said.

Rekord visited him on Tuesday, where he sat outside his neighbours’ house in clothes that had been donated to him.

The pensioner said he had not slept for days after the traumatic event.

He said he was thankful for his neighbour who had rescued his dog and all seven of her new-born pups.

“Even though I lost everything I owned, my pets are still alive for which I’m truly grateful – they mean everything to me.”

“I came back from church and was making something to eat at home when it suddenly went dark – as though the sun had disappeared,” he said.

“I went outside to see what was going on and saw these massive clouds of smoke. The world was burning around me.”

It is suspected that the fire spread from an ash-pit in the area.
