Risky road in Centurion upgraded
The project was completed at a cost of R146 million.
The upgrading of the dangerous R511 road is done and the route was reopened last Monday.
The project cost about R146-million.
Gauteng roads and transport MEC Ismail Vadi expressed confidence that the upgrade would reduce traffic congestion.
The reopening was also expected to bring an end to recent traffic disruptions due to construction work.
“It would also serve as a catalyst to equalise the distribution of wealth in the area as it is an essential freight road,” said Vadi.

“The upgrading of it to a high-quality paved road will serve to stimulate economic activities and trigger economic development between Gauteng and the North West province.”
The upgrade followed a petition signed by over 1 300 residents complaining about unsafe conditions and frequent traffic accidents on the road.
The DA shadow roads and transport MEC Fred Nel earlier said the road was “in dire need of maintenance”.
Residents also complained that almost up to three accidents occurred on the busy road “daily”.

Gauteng roads and transport spokesperson Melitah Madiba said the road rehabilitation project was funded by her department.
She said it was also envisioned that the upgrades would promote tourism in the surrounding areas.
“The construction work entailed upgrading the road linking Midrand, in Johannesburg, to Hartbeespoort dam on the border of the North West province,” she said.
The road was resurfaced and provided with edge beams.
Road markings and traffic signs were also reinstated and damaged guardrails replaced.
Overgrown grass was cut and drainage structures repaired.
The completion of the upgrade will come as a relief to local residents, as the stretch of road has been the scene of several accidents.
