NEWSFLASH: Daspoort tunnel closed after truck is set alight

Even though the tunnel has been opened, motorists were advised to use alternative routes due to traffic.

The Daspoort tunnel west of the city was closed after a truck was set alight inside the tunnel.

This happened just after 05:00 on Wednesday morning, said CPF chairperson Peet Deysel.

He said people were protesting on the Danville side of the tunnel.

It is still unclear what the protest was about.

“The tunnel was blocked by the protestors and the truck just drove through the blockade,” Deysel said.

“That was when they [the protestors] set the truck alight.”

He said shots were fired, but no one was injured.

Deysel urged residents to make use of alternative routes.

“Traffic around the tunnel is heavily backed up,” he said.
