A drugs and substance abuse prayer meeting under the theme ‘Dealing in Death – a community’s struggle with tik’ was held at the Eesterust civic centre recently.
It was attended by church members as well as various interested parties, including the police on Saturday.
Attendees prayed for God to intervene in the battle against drugs being fought by community members, NGOs, rehabilitation centres as well as the police.

Pastor Roderick Davids, of the House of Fire Full Gospel Church, said the church was worried about the problem of drug abuse in the community.
“It is a very serious problem,” he said.
“Almost every family in Eersterust is affected by the drug problem, in one way or another.”
Local pastors also prayed for school children, drugs addicts, families who live with people who are using drugs and local businesses.
The fully packed hall also listened to testimony from a church member, Ellen Pakkies, detailing how drugs ruined her son’s life, before leading him to commit suicide.
Pastor Gavin Felix led the prayer ceremony.

“The addicts need to be prayed for because when they are high on drugs or need a fix, not only their families are in danger but the community members as well, because addicts commit crime if they need a fix,” said Felix.
“Jails and rehabs are not always a solution, that is why we need to pray hard for them,” he said.
“I think it is time we involve God in this fight because He has never failed. It is high time we as church people take the stand against drugs.”
He said families must be prayed for because they use their money to send their addicted family members to rehab, only to find out that when those family members return they go right back to drugs.
