VIDEO: Eldoraigne barrier to keep motorists in line

This means a few possibly red-faced individuals will now have no choice but to turn around and head back.

Motorists “taking chances” to slip off on the side of Hendrik Verwoerd Drive in Eldoraigne are now a thing of the past.

A steel barrier installed on Thursday means motorists will now have to brave the traffic when travelling to and from work.

It has been set up over a stretch of a gravel road which motorists had in the past used to circumvent peak-hour traffic, according to local ward councillor Cindy Billson.

Billson said the need for the barrier was necessitated by the many accidents on the road in the past.

“The traffic on Hendrik Verwoerd Drive between Willem Botha Drive and Theuns van Niekerk Street is especially bad in the morning,” she said.

“Some motorists use the road reserve next to Hendrik Verwoerd Drive to get past the queue and this had even led to some accidents. With the new barrier this will no longer be possible.”

Billson said this tactic was used not only by minibus taxis but by truck drivers and even buses.

The barrier is located a short distance from where motorists tend to get on their “shortcut” and is perpendicular to the road.

This means a few possibly red-faced individuals will now have no choice but to turn around and head back.

Concrete bollards on the opposite side of the road prevent similar manoeuvres and more of these will be placed in the area to prevent motorists from getting any more “ideas”.

Billson said the barrier’s estimated cost is around R45 000.

Motorists are advised to adhere to the rules of the road.
