Motor vehicle-related crimes remain a headache for police in the north of Pretoria.
“Our problem is still theft of motor vehicles and theft out of motor vehicles,” Sinoville police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk said.
He said the problem was widespread in the area including at the Montana hospital.
“It’s everywhere – shopping centres, schools…”
Van Dyk said a contributory factor to the rampant crime was that motorists did not check their vehicles after parking.

“People must check if their windows are closed, their doors locked and make sure valuables are out of sight,” he said.
Motorists were advised to also ensure they placed their valuables in the boot before parking at any destination.
“When you put your valuables in the car in a parking and you’re going to leave the car it’s just good as advertising them,” Van Dyk said.
He also cautioned motorists against parking in secluded areas as it made their vehicles targets because they were out of sight of security and parking guards.
“They must park close to entrances and security.”
A source told Rekord the most targeted vehicles for theft were Volkswagen Polo and Toyota models.
“All the Toyota models are targets, old and new.”
In March, Rekord spoke to Pretoria North police spokesperson Captain Rebecca Phatlane who aid there was a “serious” problem related to car jamming in her policing precinct.
She said theft out of motor vehicles was also a problem in the area.
