East courier find drugs in packages

The street value of the drugs is estimated to be around R50 000.

A courier company in the east of Pretoria  discovered drugs in some of the packages it was meant to deliver on Friday.

Police spokesperson Captain Jan Sepato said the company contacted the police after it found a large amount of marijuana packaged in different plastics and boxes.

“The quantity and the manner in which the marijuana was packaged suggests it was meant for distribution,” he said.

The street value of the drugs is estimated to be around R50 000.

He said police were on the alert as this might be a new method of distributing drugs.

“We urge couriers to be very vigilant as they may innocently receive packages for delivery only to find that there are drugs,” he said.

“We urge companies to report any suspicious packages to the police.”

Sepato said police are trying to trace the origin of the package.

If caught, they will be charged with dealing in drugs.
