The Lyttelton police, a private security company and the local CPF arrested a man trying to steal a cellphone tower battery over the weekend.
The man was arrested in the early morning hours of Saturday in South Street.
Private security company Monitor Net were alerted that four men were trying to steal the battery, according to company spokesperson JP le Roux.
Le Roux said when the men spotted the security guards, two fled on foot and the other two in a vehicle.
“The police were called to assist,” he said.
Police spokesperson Captain Dave Miller said the Lyttelton police and CPF arrived, “cordoned off the area and the Pretoria police K9 unit” began tracking the suspects.
“One of the men was found hiding nearby. He tried to flee but had nowhere to run to, so was arrested.”
The battery as well as burglary equipment were recovered.
“The man was charged with tampering with essential infrastructure,” said Miller.
“Anyone found to be tampering with this essential infrastructure can face as many as 30 years in prison or a hefty R100-million fine.”
In an unrelated incident, Le Roux confirmed that Monitor Net last week helped Erasmia police after a couple were robbed in the area.
Le Roux said it appeared the couple had visited a dumpsite in the area to collect bricks where about five men robbed them of their cellphones.
“The robbers forced the woman into their vehicle,” he said.
Later they let her go and she went to the Erasmia police station.
