There has been a hike in business robberies in the Moot, a security company said.
“We have on average about three incidents reported to us each week,” said Reinhard Raschke of MCS Security.
He said mostly foreign national shops were targeted.

“These shops are easy targets because they are open till late and they mostly work with cash,” he said.
“Shop-owners are also alone in the shop most of the time, do not have the proper lighting and some of them even sleep at the shop.”
In the latest incident, the owner of the shop in Hertzog Street was assaulted during an armed robbery on Saturday.

Criminals stole six cellphones, cigarettes and an unknown amount of money before they fled the scene.
Raschke said shop-owners could implement some safety measures.
“Most of these shops only have a panic button, which is not enough and security officers cannot get to the scene in time,” he said.

He said shop-owners and employees should be more visible in and around the shop.
“They could also implement more security measures – it would help the police so much more if there were cameras installed,” he said.
