Police and SBV security services are together investigating a cash-in-transit robbery in Laudium on Tuesday afternoon.
The cash-in-transit van had just pulled into the parking lot at Laudium Square after collecting cash from a bank when it was attacked, said police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Katlego Mogale.
“About five suspects armed with a rifle and pistols approached the van which had four security guards inside,” she said.
“One security guard was pistol-whipped and another sustained injuries to his elbow when he fell jumping out of the vehicle.”

She said both injured guards were taken to the nearest hospital for treatment.
An undisclosed amount of cash, three handguns belonging to the security guards and a rifle was taken before the robbers fled the scene in a silver Toyota Hilux.
Shots were reportedly fired, said Mogale.
SBV said its risk and compliance team is working closely with the police in investigating the attack.

SBV group CEO Mark Barrett said SBV thoroughly investigated all incidents.
“We do not tolerate any violence, crime and threats to our guards’ lives,” he said.
“Together with the authorities, we will ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.”
He said SBV employees were trained to follow “standard operating procedures” and to avoid attacks to ensure the safety of civilians.
