Police confirmed reports of a cash-in-transit robbery in Laudium on Tuesday afternoon.
They, however, could not supply any details at the time of going to press.
Initial reports by the local CPF claimed five suspects robbed a cash-in-transit vehicle in Tangerine Street as it was making its way from a nearby bank.
The heavily armed suspects forced the security guards out of the vehicle, according to Laudium CPF deputy chairperson Shaeen Osman.
Osman said the men reportedly took the guards’ firearms as well as an undisclosed amount of money.
“One of the guards was assaulted and shots were fired at police,” he said.
“The robbers fled the scene via the R55 and police gave chase. A police helicopter was also dispatched.”
Osman described the scene as “tense” following the incident.
“The assaulted guard was treated by paramedics at the scene,” he said.
“The extent of his injuries are unclear at this stage.”
Constable Simon Chokoe of the Laudium police confirmed the robbery, but could not provide more details at this stage.
