Two men accused of scamming people in the Pretoria CBD were arrested on Wednesday.
The suspects aged between the ages of 24 and 32 were nabbed on Church Square next to Van Schaik bookstore, said police spokesperson Constable Thabang Nkumise.
Nkumise said a complainant had informed the police that they had been threatened by scammers, and a case of extortion was opened while a police vehicle rushed to the scene.
“They cornered the suspects with the assistance of the complainant and they will be charged with extortion and will appear in Pretoria magistrate’s court soon,” he said.
Nkumise urged the public to beware such scammers and report any criminal activity in the CBD.

“The scammers pose as mobile [phone] dealer/promoters in the streets then harass the passers-by to join their deals. They would ask for a cellphone from the victim and pretend to be uploading an app,” Nkumise said.
He said the scammers would then demand R400 or more with immediate effect.
If the victim refused to pay, they would threaten the victim.
He said more suspects would be arrested as the investigation unfolded.
